Bob Marley and the Wailers: Miami 1978

Plus Bob Marley the Political Activist

Bob Marley and the Wailers play the final show of the Kaya Tour at Jai Alai Fronton, Miami, FL on August 5, 1978.  Upon returning home to Jamaica, Bob Marley finds himself at the center of a fight between the Assembly of Rastafarian Patriarchs and the Cabinet of the Jamaican Government over the re-examination of the Damgerous Drugs Law, the transfer of Sovereign power from the Queen of England to Jamaicans, and a repatriation programme.  During this fight, rastafarians, led by Jah Lloyd, seized an area of National Heroes Park in Kingston on August 1 and held, what was supposed to be, a 29-day vigil.  However, they ended up occupying the park well into September.  Bob Marley was enlisted upon his return from touring North America as a key negotiating partner.  I have included a series of articles on the stand-off from the Jamaica Gleaner.

Says Lindsay Donald of this photo:

“Jah Lloyd’s army were a militant lot and even Bob would sometime trod carefully around them.”

Notes

The first part of “Positive Vibration” is distorted due to tape problems.  Most of the show has been released on the bootleg “Live At Miami ’80,” which misses “Jammin’” and includes three songs from the late show in Madison, WI.    This is the last show of the Kaya Tour.  The show was initially set to be the opening show of the Kaya Tour, but was postponed.
