Unreleased photos of Bob Marley live at the Apollo Theater, NYC, 1979

Included here are previously unreleased photos of Bob Marley performing at the Apollo Theater in 1979.

When I first posted these photos of Bob Marley live at the Apollo Theater, NYC on September 24, 2014, it was the first time these photos had ever been seen by the public.  I was given several photo contact sheets by a friend containing never-before published photos of Bob Marley performing at Harlem’s Apollo Theater in October 1979.  The photos had been sitting in a box in a garage since 1979.  After conducting a ton of research it appears that the photos were taken by French photographer Franck Vieljeux.

Earl Chin interviews Bob Marley (1979) ahead of two shows at the Apollo…

This was the first time Marley and the Wailers played Harlem in New York City. The same venue made famous by James Brown, Marcus Garvey and other crucial figures in African American culture, the Wailers shows were part of a larger effort to break the Wailers to an African American audience. The interview is conducted by Earl Chin who was one of the first people to have an all reggae show on cable television in the United States.

“In late October 1979, Bob Marley and the Wailers made their Apollo debut with a sold-out seven show run. These performances were very special to the band for several reasons. Harlem was where Marcus Garvey first reached out to the African American community hearkening them to “look to East Africa, for the crowning of the Black King” – an idea which helped kindled the early flames of the Rastafari Movement. Additionally, Marley’s concert run at the Apollo was his attempt to connect with the black community in North America and spread the message of Pan-Africanism and global black unity.”
