Dennis Brown “Voice of My Father” (Observer)

“If they say that Bob Marley is the king of reggae music, then Dennis Brown is the crown prince.” These words weren’t spoken by one of Brown’s sons or daughters, or his widow, or some VP Records executive, or some devoted Dennis Brown fan. These are the words of Damian Marley, youngest son of the late reggae king himself.

“The voice of my Father screams out loud ‘mankind know yourself!”

One of my favorite Dennis Brown tunes is “Voice of My Father,” which Brown recorded with producer Winston “Niney” Holness in 1975.  Dennis’ profoundly inspiring words are strengthened by an outstanding performance on the riddim by the great Soul Syndicate band.  However, there is even a standout among Soul Syndicate’s brilliant performance here.  Tony Chin’s performance on guitar here is simply supernatural and Niney’s instinct to bring it to the forefront of the mix makes for one of the most remarkable and memorable guitar performances I’ve ever heard in reggae.

Also included here is a well-deserved 2010 feature on Brown by NPR titled Dennis Brown: The ‘Crown Prince’ Of Reggae.
