Taitu Records Haile O Showcase delivers the roots and culture

The second-best reggae album I’ve heard so far in 2016 is Taitu Records Haile O Showcase.  The album compiles some of Taitu’s most solid releases including Daweh Congo’s “Go With Jah,” Mark Wonder’s “Real Battle Axe,” Abijah’s “Word of Life,” and Yami Bolo’s “War In The Garrison.”  In true showcase fashion, each vocal track is backed by the version, each of which is brilliantly mixed by Russ D of Disciples fame.

The album opens with Yami Bolo’s “War In The Garrison,”  a ragga roots and culture revive tune with an Xterminator-esque digital sound and vibe.  Bolo fans will know and love this sound as it is reminiscent of the heyday at Xterminator when names like Bolo and Kamoze blessed the vocal booth.

Taitu comes with a double-shot of the very popular “Go With Jah” riddim from last year.  Daweh Congo takes control on the title track and Mark Wonder is impressive on “Real Battle Axe.”  These two shots shine bright on an album chock full of riddim.  Also noteworthy is Mikey Melody’s “Haile O” and Abijah’s “Word of Life.

While there are some fine vocal performances on the album, the dub tracks are by far the highlight as Russ D delivers blistering version mixes of each riddim.  If you are not familiar with his work please crawl out from the cave you are inhabiting, find an online reggae record seller, and cop whatever is available.  He is one of the wickedest dubmixologists in the game today.  Something tells me that you won’t find another dub album this good in 2016.
