Zion I Kings ‘H.I.M. Teachings Riddim Compilation’ (2018)

The first stellar reggae release of 2018 is the ‘H.I.M. Teachings Riddim Compilation’ album by Zion I Kings. With ‘H.I.M. Teachings’ the ZIK come with a futuristic vibe on an unforgettably brilliant riddim.  This riddim most recently appeared on Lutan Fyah’s excellent Music Never Dies LP as the backing to the killer “Test A Money.”  While ZIK are credited as the production crew for the riddim it is Zion High’s David “Jah David” Goldfine who does the heavy lifting here.  The album features crucial cuts by Pressure, Akae Beka, Lloyd Brown, Lutan Fyah, Arkaingelle, and Jahbar I.  The standout track is Marlon Asher’s “Improve.”

ZIK have built a solid foundation for the modern roots reggae sound with inventive and authentic productions which have had a profound effect on the quality of modern roots reggae.  Their work with the Virgin Islands reggae contingent, especially their collaborations with St. Croix’s Midnite and NYC-based spit-kicker Jahdan Blakkamore, has ushered in the most inventive and transformational period for roots reggae since the Roots Radics met Henry “Junjo” Lawes at Channel One studios.

ZIK’s unique production sound is “Digital Ancient” – dynamic, modern and progressive with a spiritual intensity that almost commands a brilliant performance by the vocal artist.  They can flip it dancehall style with an urban flair yet still bring the roots and culture as good as any act in reggae today.  It is a sound that has clearly influenced an entire generation of aspiring roots reggae artists, especially the so-called Jamaican “reggae revival” artists.
