BEST OF 2017

2017 has been a stellar year so far for reggae releases.  The very first release that hit me this year was the Better Days Riddim compilation from Germany’s Oneness Records.  Brilliant performances from both Iba Mahr and Pressure over a killer and uplifting modern roots riddim.

One of the most anticipated albums of the year was Lutan Fyah’s Music Never Dies, a crucial collaboration with Zion I Kings.  The album delivers all day long as it is the best album of Lutan Fyah’s career.  It also includes my favorite reggae tune of 2017, the sublime “Perfect Storm.”

My man Moss Raxlen came with his much-anticipated Kingston All Stars project.  The two album set, a vocal and a dub album, is one of the best of 2017 with performances by some of the most legendary singers and players to ever emerge in reggae.

The uber-talented Samory I dropped his debut album Black Gold, a murderous collaboration with RoryStoneLove.  The album includes some of the hardest and heaviest roots reggae productions I’ve ever heard.  Top album this one.

One of my favorite albums of 2017 is Akae Beka’s JahSayDo, a very eclectic Vaughn Benjamin collaboration with Uhuru Boys Productions.  I also really dig the debut album by Jamaica’s Spiritual titled Awakening.  The sound of this album is very reminiscent of Burning Spear’s work from the mid-1980s.

The best album of the year is Christos DC’s Tessera – hands down.  It is a flawless modern roots reggae album from start to finish.  The production quality is unparalleled.  The lyrics and musicianship beyond exceptional.  It is the type of album that only comes along once a decade.  Do not miss this one.
