Midnight Dread Top Six ‘Unreleased’ Bob Marley & Wailers Live Videos

2_4_80MD8MxcldSS

For my extra special contribution to the Midnight Raver Millennial Posts Musical Stampede I and I offer this tough and tight quick list / long view of Bob Marley & The Wailers’ most amazing performances captured live (outside of One Love Peace & Smile Jamaica) on film or video. These complete concerts or rehearsals should be made widely available as soon as possible in the fullness with state-of-the-art transfers of both sound and image at the highest standards in line with the depth of the lyrics and musicianship. Granted, a couple of these have seen some limited release in either geography or selection and thanks to YouTube can be constricted to fit on most any current receiver device but all call for bigga big up screen THX (give thanx) surround style reproduction to reincarnate every soul. Lively up Skip!

Bob Marley and the Wailers: ‘Dub Congo Demos and Alternate Mixes’

There is very little known about the tape that circulates as Bob Marley Dub-Congo Mixes.  It contains 25 demos and alternate takes of Wailers’ tracks spanning the entirety of their career.  These tracks are presented in lossless (FLAC) audio in excellent sound quality.  It is always amazing to me how many of these recordings are preserved so pristeenly over the past 30+ years.

Of note is the appearance of dub reggae legend Augustus Pablo on the “Redder Than Red” demos.  Most people associate the melodica-playing Horace Swaby with the name ‘Augustus Pablo,’ however, according to my good friend and noted author David Katz, several people assumed this name in the early 1970s, including keyboardist Glen Adams and several other members of The Upsetters, and vocalist and keyboardist Lloyd Charmers (Solid Foundation:  An Oral History of Reggae, 2003).

Survival Rehearsal Recordings, 1979

I have included here a link to download the 1979 Survival rehearsals demos.  The NOTES.txt file includes all pertinent information regarding source, transfer, and upgrade.  I also included a news article from the Jamaica Gleaner, published August 1979, which speaks to the success of the first single off the album called “Ambush In The Night.”

Originally slated to be titled Black Survival, Survival is an album with an outwardly militant theme which explores the themes of black nationalism, Pan-African solidarity, and injustice at all levels. Marley took a great risk in releasing such a politically and racially charged album, especially after releasing such a mellow album in Kaya the year prior.

The record album front cover by Neville Garrick depicts 48 flags of 47 African countries and one flag of a Pacific island nation (row 7, column 3; included because of Marley’s warm relations with tribes people ala the Maori and Hopi). Presumably the flags were in use when the album was designed, in preparation for publishing in 1979, though many became obsolete.
