Bob Marley and The Wailers embarked on a major European tour in the spring of 1980, breaking attendance records in several countries. In Milan, Italy, they performed before 100,000 people, the largest audience of their career. Bob Marley’s Last Interview with Jay Strausser, WRUV FM, Burlington, VT November 1980

I have included a phone interview that Jay Strausser of WRUV Burlington, VT conducted with Bob Marley on November 5, 1980.  Little did Strausser know that this would be his last interview with Marley.  Just a few days after this interview, Marley boards a plane for Germany to seek alternative treatment for his terminal cancer.  Marley sounds incredibly upbeat in this interview, which is amazing to me considering the knowledge that he had about the progression of his disease.

It’s sad to listen to this interview knowing what we know now.  However, it is a significant part of the archive, so have a listen.

Peter Tosh: Reggae Sunsplash III, July 2-5, Ranny Williams Entertainment Center, Kingston, Jamaica

Held July 2-5, 1980 at the at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Center, Kingston, Jamaica Reggae Sunsplash III takes the Sunsplash franchise to another level.

The concert is being held a few short months prior to a General Election, and the island is rife with political violence.  This explains the festival grounds resembling some sort of prison camp, with the crowd completely surrounded by solid rows of uniformed soldiers with M-16 rifles sporting fixed bayonets.

The show goes off without a single reported incident though, and the crowd is blessed with “unusually inspired” performances from the likes of Culture, Black Uhuru, The Gladiators, Mighty Diamonds, and of course a sizzling set by the one and only Peter Tosh.

“Marley Stirs It Up With My Photos” by David Meerman Scott

I just read a great story by author David Meerman Scott at The Huffington Post and decided to share it here.  He took several historic photos at Bob Marley‘s final show at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh, PA on September 23, 1980.  He took these photos with a borrowed camera.  They are featured in the new “Marley” film.
