Alpha Blondy feat. The Wailers “Jerusalem” (HQ vinyl transfer) 1988

Alpha Blondy’s 1988 album ‘Jerusalem’ is an absolute stunner.  The album, recorded at Tuff Gong, features Alpha Blondy backed by the Wailers band, including Junior Marvin on lead guitar, Chinna on rhythm guitar, Tyrone Downie, Wire Lindo, and Touter Harvey on keys, Carlton Barrett on drums, Family Man on bass, Scully and Sticky on percussions, and the Wailers brass on horns.  The album was released in the US on Randall Grass’s Shanachie label.

What do you get when you put the Ivory Coast reggae superstar in the studio with the tightest band reggae has ever known?

Lloyd Charmers & Hippy Boys “African Zulu / Safari”

Here is a neat little limited edition 7″ that I picked up at my local record store last week.  Titled “African Zulu / Safari” by Lloyd Charmers & Hippy Boys.  The single, released in the late 1990s on the Trybute label,  is pressed on brilliant red vinyl.  These ska tunes, originally cut in 1969 under the guidance of Lloyd Charmers, an accomplished singer, keyboardist, and record producer.  A member of the Uniques, a vocal group that included lead singer Keith ‘Slim’ Smith, Charmers provided backing vocals on many early reggae hits such as Winston ‘Niney’ Holness’ “Blood and Fire” which made the British national chart in 1971.  His greatest success as a producer came in 1975 with Ken Boothe’s “Everything I Own,” which topped the British national chart.
An interesting historical note, Charmers was the very first musician to take on the name “Augustus Pablo,” based on a concept conceived by Herman Lin-Choy.  The pseudonym would later be used with great success by multi-talented musician and dub genius Horace Swaby.
The Hippy Boys was formed in 1968 by Charmers. The band included guitarist Alva “Reggie” Lewis, organist Glen Adams and brothers Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett on bass guitar and Carlton Barrett drums respectively.  Upon the UK Singles Chart success of “Return of Django” in 1969, Lee “Scratch” Perry and The Upsetters were invited on a six-week tour of the UK. However, due to a clashing of schedules, the original Upsetters could not make the trip. The newly formed Hippy Boys became the new Upsetters for the tour; causing the band to be frequently confused with the original Upsetters in the future.
Crucial history lesson…

Bob Marley & the Wailers, Manhattan, 1975

Here is a classic Bob Marley and the Wailers performance at Manhattan Center, NYC, on June 21, 1975.  In addition to the fantastic lossless audio, we now have some video which can only be described as phenomenal.  As part of the ‘MARLEY’ documentary push in 2012, the Marley family had the video recording upgraded to high-definition, however, very little was actually featured in the film.  It was released as a special feature on the Blu-Ray DVD of ‘MARLEY.’  Thing is, as far as I know, it is only featured on the DVD release in Europe.  My DVD copy does not contain this footage.  It is the highest quality video footage of a Marley performance in existence.

MIDNIGHT RAVER’S Bob Marley Singles Vinyl Megamix

For your weekend soundtrack I threw together only the finest selections of Bob Marley and the Wailers’ singles from the vinyl catalog.  Set starts off with my favorite BMW tune “So Much Trouble In The World” with Tyrone Downie murdering the keys.  The set closes with a tune so good I refuse to believe that even King Marley penned it…”Wisdom.”  No disappointments here.  As they say “All Killer, No Filler”…vocals and versions.
“Babylon feel dis ya one!”
