Midnight Raver’s Album Pick of the Week!

WAYNE JARRETT ‘SHOWCASE VOL. 1′ (WACKIES)

Sit down and put a seatbelt on before you listen to this one.  The sweet, soulful voice of Wayne Jarrett, backed by the All-Stars, and recorded at just the right level by Bullwackie.  Only Bullwackie could have produced this record because it has a distinctive sound that is every bit Fort Apache/Motown Philly/Chocolate City and Kingston, Jamaica all rolled in to this perfectly produced showcase album.  In my opinion, this is Lloyd Barnes at his best.  Just check the echo placed on Jarrett’s vocal on the opener “Brimstone and Fire.“  Jarrett is all but whispering the words to the mic.  The whispered vocal takes flight with Lloyd Barnes and Prince Douglas at the board.  Check how Barnes slows the whole crew down to a crawl for this wicked version of “Every Tongue Shall Tell.”  The dub track simply stupid.  Clive Hunt, the Chosen Brothers, and Jerry Johnson on the riddim tracks haaard.  A perfect album in every sense.  “F*ck the new jack swing, Gimme that Wackies thing!”  None cyan’ test it!

Lacksley Castell ‘Morning Glory + Dub Tracks’ (Negus Roots, 1982)

Repost:  This is a re-post from November 2, 2012.  This album is so good that I must share it here at least twice per year.  Better yet, I did a mix of the album which features the hard-to-find dub tracks immediately after each album track.  This is one of our most popular posts.
At the risk of blowing up my site too soon, this is probably the best share I can offer here.  If you are a fan of reggae, and you have never listened to Lacksley Castell’s ‘Morning Glory’ (Negus Roots, 1982), then you are about to discover an album which will reset your dial in terms of quality roots reggae.  Many of the melodies and riddims contained in this album sound almost divinely inspired.  It is a wonder how someone so young (Castell was only 20 years old when he composed the album) was able to deliver something so inspired, so groundbreaking, so monumental. Unfortunately, Castell would release only one more studio album before passing away in 1984 due to complications of asthma and tuberculosis.
I personally remastered the album, inserting at the end of each track the Sly and Robbie dub track.  The dub tracks to the album were released as ‘Dub Rockers Delight’ by Sly and Robbie the same year.  This vinyl LP is very rare and really expensive, however, it was re-released several years ago on compact disc under a different name.  Castell’s ‘Morning Glory’ was long out-of-print before it was re-released in 2005.  Because both albums were recently re-released, I am unable to provide a download link.  However, upon listening, I’m sure many of you will track these albums down.

Augustus Pablo: Tales of Pablo, The Beat, Vol. 18 #4, 1999

As we wrap on Rockers week here at the MIDNIGHT RAVER BLOG, never fret.  I will continue to promote the fine music of Addis Pablo and the Suns of Dub.  Augustus Pablo’s spirit will live on here for as long as I continue to bring the best in dub and reggae to the people.  In that light, I am currently researching and preparing a written piece on the late, great Hugh Mundell.  I am working with several people who knew him well, and it is a known fact that the person who had the greatest influence in his life-as a father figure, as a spiritual guide, as a mentor in the business – was none other than Augustus Pablo.  Soon come…
