Keith Hudson “Be What You Want To Be” w/ version (1981)

Curtis wish he were as funky as Keith Hudson.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Mayfield man to the bone, but Hudson takes funky to the marrow.  Wait, not “funky”…. Phonky!  A man’s man with his swagger, and a ladies man with his looks, Hudson might fight you and record you on the same day.  If he couldn’t beat you, ‘Stamma’ surely would.  ‘Stamma’?  As George Fully Fullwood once told me during an interview “Stamma was as his right hand all de time.  Dem nuh cross Stamma.”

Hudson’s style?  “Nuh skin up.”

No frontin.’

So natty he once “Broke The Comb…

So sit back and have a listen to the phonkiest soul brotha, and oh what a mutha…hey watch yo mouth!

From the album ‘Playin’ It Cool’ (1981) I give you “Be What You Want To Be” w/ version and from the ‘Pick A Dub‘ album featuring the Barrett Brothers I give you “The Michael Talbot Affair.”  Also check my review of Hudson’s ‘Rasta Communication’ which was re-released by Greensleeves last year.

And, seriously, where else on the web can you find vintage Melody Maker articles about the “Dark Prince Of Reggae“?  Lucky for us it is a double-feature: Tosh and Hudson.  Courtesy of MIDNIGHT RAVER’S own Peter van Arnhem.

Exclusive! Peter Tosh in Vienna, Austria, June 1981

Today we have a MIDNIGHT RAVER BLOG EXCLUSIVE!  The MIDNIGHT RAVER BLOG recently obtained rare video footage of Peter Tosh’s visit to Wien, Austria in June 1981.  As part of his European tour, Tosh plays the 2nd Annual Vienna Folk Festival, Donauinsel, Wien, Vienna, Austria on June 18, 1981 (a date documented and confirmed by MIDNIGHT RAVER’S own Andreas von der Heide!).  While in Austria Tosh participates in several press interviews, and during one of them he performs an acoustic version of “Pick Myself Up” which is just phenomenal.  We are under a very specific order which prohibits us from sharing the video in its entirety, however, we put together a short slideshow of screenshots featuring a segment of Tosh’s acoustic performance of “Pick Myself Up.”
Give thanks to Andreas von der Heide and Fred “Reggaelover” P, who were instrumental in securing this rare tape.

Peter Tosh “You Can’t Fool Me Again” 7 inch 45 rpm (Impact)

Today I’m sharing with you another outstanding Clive Chin production.  In 2012 Chin released several rare singles from his personal archive to be pressed for fans and collectors.  Pressed on the Impact label on limited edition colored vinyl is Peter Touch’s (Tosh’s) “You Can’t Fool Me Again” on the A-side and the Version, “Straight To Jah Rabbit Head” on the flip side.  Fantastic early Tosh on collector’s grade vinyl…

Peter Tosh w/ Jimmy Cliff, Live at Santa Barbara County Bowl, 1982

According to this press article published in Billboard Magazine on October 9, 1982, Peter Tosh and Jimmy Cliff played the Santa Barbara County Bowl during their late summer/early fall run.  This is interesting information not only because I have never seen a 1982 date for the County Bowl, but also because, according to the article, the artists were captured with 8 different video cameras resulting in several documentaries on each artists, and at least one documentary on the tour!
I have never heard that there is video footage out there of Tosh and Cliff at the Santa Barbara County Bowl.  Maybe the documentaries were never finished and the film just sits in a vault or closet somewhere.  To all collectors:  GET TO WORK!  I know I will be following the leads given in the article.
If anyone out there has any information on this footage please shoot me an email at midnightraverblog@gmail.com.

And finally, here are two photos I found (actually, someone emailed them to me).  I’ve never seen them before but my friend Greg says they are from The Ritz in NYC.  The photographer is David Plastik.
